The Renaissance and Baroque styles reflect the views at the time: the precisely tailored ornamental geometric landscape symbolized the refinement of Creation by hyper-domestication. Since then, much has changed. We are now well aware of the impacts of our excessive intervention on the Earth system. Trees and plankton are becoming scarce, biodiversity is collapsing, petrochemical agriculture is inexorably depleting the soil, climate change is running wild, genetic engineering threatens a heritage that has existed since millennia, etc. Faced with this, His Holiness Francis – thus named for his affinity to Saint Francis of Assisi – is the first Pope in history to have dedicated an encyclical to ecology (Laudato Si’, On care for our common home, 2015).

To transform words into actions, we propose to turn a portion of the 23 hectares of the Vatican’s green spaces into a permaculture forest garden – a self-regulated ecosystem, which would provide a home to a wide range of biodiversity and provide healthy food. Regional nurseries could provide heirloom seed varieties and endangered plant species. The harvested produce could be used for local consumption, including at the Vatican’s homeless shelters (the Dono di Maria and the Dono di Misericordia).
This tangible transformation, which combines an ecological and a humane approach, could be fulfilled with the support of the Vatican’s gardeners, the energy of young volunteers from various dioceses, the involvement of marginalized or physically challenged persons, and the supervision of internationally renowned permaculture designers.
The plantation of this “edible forest garden” would represent a spiritual and educational experience that all contributors could bring back to their communities.

The entire transformation process could be the subject of a documentary film, which would share the project’s inspiration in the dioceses involved and beyond.

[…]

Les jardins du Vatican au diapason de Laudato Si’

En collaboration avec le Dicastère pour le service du développement humain intégral. 2015-2000.

Le dernier grand remodelage des jardins du Vatican semble remonter à quatre siècles.
